Lewis Niles Black (born 30 August 1948) started his career as a playwright, studying theatre at the University of North Carolina. In 1981, he became playwright in residence at New York's West Bank Café's Downstairs Theatre Bar. He was also the audience's 'warm-up man' for his plays and in 1989 he left to pursue comedy full-time, though also acted in small parts on TV and films. He has been a regular contributor to The Daily Show since 1996 and presents The Root of All Evil on Comedy Central. A prolific stand up, he tours worldwide, has published two books and continues to act.
