A New Yorker, born and raised, Carlin dropped out of school and joined the Air Force working part-time as a radio DJ. He was discharged and focused on being a DJ which led him on the path to comedy. He was a clean cut entertainer both in appearance and material until the late 1960s when he grew his hair long and took an anti-establishment stance. His new controversial routines finding favour among a young Bohemian audience. 1972 saw his most notorious set, Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. This got him arrested under obscenity laws and was fundamental in establishing rulings which developed into the broadcasting watershed. In 1975 he hosted the first ever Saturday Night Live. A cynical and misanthropic social commentator, his black comedy also referenced the peculiarities of language. In 2001 Carlin was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the American Comedy Awards. He died aged 71 of heart failure. HBO and NBC (two of the networks he appeared on regularly) changed their schedule in tribute to Carlin.
