His new controversial routines finding favour among a young Bohemian audience. 1972 saw his most notorious set, Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. This got him arrested under obscenity laws and was fundamental in establishing rulings which developed into the broadcasting watershed. In 1975 he hosted the first ever Saturday Night Live. A cynical and misanthropic social commentator, his black comedy also referenced the peculiarities of language. In 2001 Carlin was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the American Comedy Awards.
