Denis Colin Leary was born on 18 August 1957 in Massachusetts, and attended Emerson College in Boston. After graduating, he stayed on for five years teaching comedy writing and performing on the Boston comedy scene until his anarchic ranting-style was picked up by MTV. That routine featured the song Asshole - a polemic about the average American man - which cemented his controversial reputation. In a change of direction, he's turned to acting staring in over 40 films and the FX show Rescue Me which he co-wrote. The show won him an Emmy.
