William Melvin Hicks was born on 16 December 1961. As a child, Bill wanted to be a comic and at 13 would try to sneak into clubs to perform. In 1978, he achieved a regular slot and a special work permit due to his young age. Bill toured, performing his brand of black humour amid a fug of cigarette smoke. His shows were intense, angry diatribes on religion, consumerism and politics, designed to both engage with and alienate the audience. Bill toured, performing his brand of black humour amid a fug of cigarette smoke. His shows were intense, angry diatribes on religion, consumerism and politics, designed to both engage with and alienate the audience. He addressed big existential questions and rallied for revolution. When a member of the audience once complained: "We don't come to comedy to think". Bill retorted: "Gee! Where do you go to think? I'll meet you there!" In 1993 he won the Rolling Stone Hot Stand-up Comic of the Year. His shows were extremely well received in the UK, and he started work on projects for Channel 4. He was close to breaking into the mainstream, when in June 1993, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died on 26 February 1994, aged 32.
